Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu is the city of Kamakura's most important Shinto shrine . It was founded by Minamoto Yoriyoshi in 1063, and enlarged and moved to its current site in 1180 by Minamoto Yoritomo, the founder and first shogun of the Kamakura government.

It is situated in a lovely park setting and once you get to the top of the landing of the shrine, the view was quite impressive. The shrine was originally built in 1063 and is the most important Shinto shrine in Kamakura.

Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū. A majestic, vermilion-lacquered torii marks the front entrance to Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū (鶴岡八幡宮), the Minamoto clan's guardian shrine since 1063.
